Labour MPs demand Jeremy Corbyn resigns immediately after ‘catastrophic’ defeat

A number of Labour MPs have demanded Jeremy Corbyn resigns immediately after his ‘catastrophic’ defeat in the General Election. Angry politicians flocked to social media today to pile pressure on the party leader after he claimed to have ‘won the argument’ – despite the party’s worst election performance since 1935. Writing in The Observer, the leader of the opposition insisted the policies he set out were popular and had re-set the terms of election debate. He said: ‘I am proud that on austerity, on corporate power, on inequality and on the climate emergency we have won the arguments and rewritten the terms of political debate.’ ‘There is no doubt that our policies are popular, from public ownership of rail and key utilities to a massive house-building programme and a pay rise for millions

‘The question is how can we succeed in future where we didn’t this time?’ His comments sparked fury from MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting, who wrote: ‘We won the argument’ is the most insulting response to the worst election result since 1935 that any of us could imagine. Go. Now.

‘Every Tory policy over the next five years has been enabled by Corbynism. By @jeremycorbyn’. He was joined by MP for Camberwell and Peckham Harriet Harman who tweeted the Guardian article, adding: ‘This shows no willingness to understand why ⁦@UKLabour⁩ suffered this catastrophic defeat. ⁦@jeremycorbyn⁩ should resign. ‘We won the argument, but I regret we didn’t convert that into a majority for change’. Margaret Hodge, who held onto her Barking seat, tweeted only one word in response to Mr Corbyn’s claims, simply writing: ‘Denial’.
