German authorities described the Berlin Pride ramming as an Islamist terrorist attack. A white minivan struck pedestrians in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate, killing one person and injuring 29. Eight people were seriously hurt and three remained in a life-threatening condition.
Police identified the wanted suspect as Abdul B, a 21-year-old German-born man with a Lebanese background. Authorities said he was known to security services, had links to Berlin’s Islamist scene and may be armed and dangerous.
Some victims also suffered stab wounds. Investigators were examining whether the suspect acted alone because several people may have escaped from the van. The remainder of the Christopher Street Day celebrations was cancelled.
Accuracy note: Reuters now reports 29 injured, replacing the initial figure of 16. It also reports that the suspect was born in Germany, so the upload copy should not imply that he recently migrated to Europe or connect him directly to Channel crossings.
