Addressing New Democratic Party (NDP) supporters at campaign headquarters Monday night, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced he would be stepping down as leader of the New Democrats.
"It's been the honour of my life to represent the people of Burnaby Central," Singh said. "Tonight they chose a new member of Parliament and I wish them well as they continue to work hard for this community."
"We had really good candidates that lost tonight," Singh continued, but added "...we're only defeated when we stop fighting."
"I will be stepping down as party leader as soon as an interim party leader can be appointed," Singh said, to the collective groans and calls of "no!" from the party faithful.
Global News is projecting Liberal Leader Mark Carney will form the next government. While votes are still being tallied in some parts of the country, and it is unclear whether the Liberals will form a majority or minority government.
